Masks strongly recommended while on the TTC

Image of a new mask campaign poster “Masks strongly recommended while on the TTC”

Effective June 11, 2022, the Province’s Chief Medical Officer of Health has lifted the mask mandate for high-risk settings such as public transit and healthcare facilities. While masks are no longer mandatory, in accordance with public health guidelines, masks are strongly recommended when travelling on the TTC and while on TTC property.

It is still mandatory for Wheel-Trans operators and customers to wear masks while travelling in Wheel-Trans vehicles. This decision was based on feedback from the TTC’s Advisory Committee on Accessible Transit (ACAT) due to the close proximity and to protect vulnerable customers that travel on Wheel-Trans.

Safety remains a core priority for the TTC and there are a number of other measures that are in place:

  • Vehicle filtration has been upgraded to the highest standards.
  • Enhanced cleaning of stations and vehicles is ongoing.
  • Windows on TTC buses will continue to be opened when the bus goes into service, to enhance the airflow on the vehicle. Decals have been affixed to the windows of every bus, encouraging customers to leave them open for fresh air.
  • Customers can view real-time bus arrival and occupancy levels by route on TTC.ca to plan ahead before boarding.

The TTC Celebrates Pride

This June, the TTC is once again joining the city in celebration of Toronto’s Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Intersex, Queer and Questioning (2SLGBTQ+) communities, with vehicle wraps, social media messages, and participation in Pride Toronto festival weekend.

This year, the TTC has the following planned for Pride month:

A bus on the 94 Wellesley route wrapped with Pride-themed artwork.

A second wrapped bus operating on various routes on the west side of the city – including the 36 Finch West, 52 Lawrence, 84 Sheppard West and the 96 Wilson.

A Wheel-Trans vehicle, for the first time, will also be wrapped and operating around the City in celebration of Pride month.

The Progress Pride Flag was raised at the TTC’s head office at 1900 Yonge St., outside Davisville Station, as well as at TTC’s Hillcrest Complex this week.

During the Pride Toronto festival weekend from June 24-26, the TTC will have a booth at the StreetFair, and will have an eBus in the Trans and Dyke marches, as well as the Parade, as a show of support and for participants with accessibility needs.

The TTC is proud to celebrate its employees and customers this Pride month and continues to work hard to create a diverse and inclusive organization for all Torontonians. #TakeTheTTC to all the events: TTC Trip Planner

The TTC Honours National Indigenous History Month

Philip Cote, “The Original Family” artwork

June is National Indigenous History Month. It allows us to reflect on the history, culture, contributions, and strengths of our First Nations, Inuit, and Metis Peoples.

It is also an opportunity to learn and show recognition of the role Indigenous Peoples have played and continue to play in shaping Canada.

This year, the TTC’s Indigenous History Month awareness campaign will be focused on Indigenous artists from the Greater Toronto area and will celebrate the ways their art has enhanced Indigenous culture in the city. You will see wrapped buses and streetcars across the city that feature Indigenous art and posters inside our buses, streetcars, and subways.

In developing this campaign, the TTC’s Diversity and Racial Equity team engaged meaningfully with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Haudenosaunee (Six Nations of the Grand River) to ensure that First Nations were fully engaged in the process.

Diversity and inclusion are top priorities at the TTC, as we strive to become a leader in the industry in confronting existing issues and making meaningful changes to address them. Connecting people to Indigenous culture is an important way for us to show the value that diversity brings to our city and our system. The featured Indigenous artists and artwork can be viewed here.

Wheel-Trans Shared Customer Rides Resume March 20

In response to the improving COVID-19 climate, the Ontario Government, in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health, has moved to the next phase of its plan to reopen the province, easing several restrictions related to capacity limits. In keeping with this direction and with the support of ACAT, Wheel-Trans is planning to reintroduce shared customer rides in a safe and phased approach starting March 20, 2022. Wheel-Trans will reintroduce shared rides starting with the largest vehicles first.

Customer and operator safety remains our top priority, and as such, COVID-19 safety measures, including customer health screening questionnaires, and mandatory masks/face coverings will still be in place. Physical distancing will also be maintained on our larger vehicles, where possible.

The TTC Safety Department, in consultation with Toronto Public Health, has advised Wheel-Trans that with the TTC’s current safety protocols, shared rides are a safe means of transport. By reintroducing shared rides, Wheel-Trans will be following in the footsteps of our GTHA transit partners who have already reintroduced ride sharing.

If you have any questions, please contact Wheel-Trans Customer Service at 416-393-4111 or email: [email protected]and we will respond to your inquiries in a prompt manner.

The TTC Honours International Women’s Day

Last week the TTC honoured International Women’s Day in a number of ways including showcasing the #BreakTheBias pose on social media to stand up for gender equality and a more inclusive world.

With our 10-Point Action Plan on Diversity and Inclusion, we are aiming to build a more inclusive transit system and close the gap between the number of women we employ in the Transit Operator role and the communities they serve. Our goal was to ensure four out of every 10 Operators hired in 2021 were women, and we are proud to share that we exceeded this target. In fact, 60 percent of Operators hired identified as women.

TTC Subway Closures

Image of TTC employees working on a subway closure at track level.

The TTC was able to accelerate and complete critical work this year during three extended subway closures. Crews were able to complete asbestos removal, tunnel lining repairs and electrical upgrades. Accelerating this work during a period of reduced ridership has spared our customers between 75 and 100-weekend closures over the next few years.

No further subway closures are scheduled for the remainder of 2021. Once the schedule for 2022 has been finalized, subway closures will be posted here.

  • Already tapped
  • Activate card online
  • Blocked card and Reload funds.

In addition to these changes, a new three-toned chime sound and flashing yellow light will be introduced to indicate a child card is being used. Welcoming customers back safely

The world has changed and so have we.

A new TTC ad campaign has launched across the city. The campaign informs potential customers, and customers who may return in the fall, about safety measures on the TTC.

The campaign features information about:

  • How customers can plan their trip and avoid crowded buses by using real-time bus count information through the Rocketman or Transit app
  • Ways the TTC has enhanced its cleaning, disinfecting and air filtration systems on its vehicles and in its stations
  • Mask availability for customers who may have forgotten theirs

For both customers and employees, masks remain mandatory on TTC property and must be worn properly, covering the nose, mouth and chin.

Back to School TTC Service

It’s that time of year again! We are focused on providing a safe and reliable service to students returning to school. Here are some ways we are preparing for September.

Coordinating with school boards
We are, and will continue, to work with school boards to obtain enrollment numbers. Information such as dismissal times, particularly for high schools, will help us target key times when service is needed most.

Assessing capacity
Our Research and Analytics as well as Service Planning teams will assess capacity based on current ridership and service levels to identify potential hot spots during school start and dismissal times.

Implementing demand-responsive school service
We will utilize our demand-responsive buses to supplement regular service based on the capacity assessment.

Adjusting service
We expect that adjustments will be made throughout the first few weeks of school as travel patterns become clearer. As we make adjustments, we will determine which changes can be formally scheduled later in the fall and early 2021.

More information on TTC’s back to school service and safety tips will be available on www.ttc.ca

City of Toronto and partners announce Vaccine Equity Transportation Plan

The City of Toronto announced the Vaccine Equity Transportation Plan, a multi-faceted plan to help ensure vulnerable residents and seniors can access COVID-19 vaccinations by removing barriers to transportation and making it easier to travel to clinics.

This program is intended for those who have limited transportation options or who cannot afford transportation to vaccination appointments. The City has been piloting transportation options for seniors aged 75 years old and over by extending service hours for assisted ride services provided by community organizations.

The City has already been working with multiple partners to plan and deliver this program, including Toronto Ride, iRide, Scarborough Ride, Ontario Health Partners, Uber Canada and the TTC, to help transport vulnerable residents to and from appointments for COVID-19 vaccinations.

The TTC is working with the City to distribute 15,000 TTC ride vouchers through a network of partner community agencies across Toronto to provide to people who cannot afford transit fare, with no-cost rides to and from vaccination sites that started in April.

The full City of Toronto news release is available here: www.toronto.ca/home/media-room/news-releases-media-advisories/

TTC’s eBus fleet is expanding

The TTC Board recently approved procurement of 300 eBuses. These new buses will begin servicing our transit network between 2023 and 2025.

The TTC’s Green Bus Program identifies a procurement strategy to transition the fleet to zero-emissions by the year 2040. This plan is in alignment with the City of Toronto’s Transform TO Action Plan and the C40 Fossil-Fuel-Free Streets Declaration.

When the entire fleet is zero-emissions in 2040, benefits are expected as follows:

  1. Greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by approximately 250,000 tonnes of CO2 annually;
  2. Diesel emissions will be eliminated from bus operations thereby improving local air quality;
  3. Vehicle reliability and availability will have increased by an estimated 25%; and
  4. Total life cycle cost of zero-emissions buses is estimated to be lower than any currently available fossil-fuel propulsion alternative.

The TTC’s first 60 eBuses were procured from BYD, NFI and Proterra. Prior to the delivery of these eBuses, three garages were retrofitted with depot charging systems to accommodate charging up to 25 eBuses per location. All 60 eBuses procured are now in service at the TTC. The first eBus entered service on June 3, 2019 and the 60th vehicle entered service on December 4, 2020.

As part of this process, the TTC and YRT are reviewing the way customers pay their fare, including payment options, pricing and charges for cross-boundary travel. This is an important project that will work to improve customer experience, and help create a simple and consistent fare system for the TTC and YRT.

As of May 12, customers and employees can share their feedback through an online survey. A Virtual Town Hall meeting will also be held on May 19, 2021. More information about these feedback opportunities will be available next week at www.ttc.ca/farepolicy.

Safety on the TTC

Since January, the TTC has been performing significant additional cleaning and disinfection of all public spaces with a focus on touch and grab points, such as buttons, railings, handles and straps. Other efforts the TTC has taken to ensure our customers and employees stay safe include:

  • Cleaning all vehicles at least twice a day with hospital-grade disinfectant;
  • Continuing to stock hand sanitizer in every station and on every streetcar and Wheel-Trans vehicle;
  •  Implementing demand-responsive bus service in addition to scheduled service; and
  • The continued use of seat barriers and physical distancing signage in stations to allow customers to continue to practice safe physical distancing while travelling on the TTC.

For more information about staying safe on the TTC, check out our website.

One million masks campaign

In June, the TTC partnered with the City of Toronto Poverty Reduction Strategy Office to distribute one million masks to TTC customers across the city. Masks were distributed at subway stations and busy bus stops, in neighbourhood improvement areas and to community organizations identified by the Poverty Reduction Strategy Office. The TTC is pleased to announce that it has reached its target of distributing one million masks, and will continue giving masks to customers across Toronto! TTC ambassadors will be distributing masks over the next few weeks along 25 busy bus routes and at subway stations.

Infrastructure upgrades

Construction during subway closures

Sparks shoot out as a TTC employee works on a subway track replacement
A TTC employee completes track work in the subway tunnel.

The November 7-8 closure on Line 1 allowed our crews to replace over 100 metres of rail between St George and Museum stations. Crews also installed 410 new plates, which are pieces of steel that affix the rail to the ties, between St George and Spadina stations. TTC signal crews were also able to complete old signal equipment removals at six locations between Osgoode and Queen’s Park stations. Newly installed ATC signals are now in place.

Maintenance work took place between Museum and Spadina stations and included work on switches at our St George, Spadina and Museum track crossovers. Various inspections between Osgoode to Queen’s Park and Dupont to St Clair West stations were also conducted.

Nightly early closures from November 2-5 helped our Structure Maintenance team continue the ATC Phase 5 preparation and work on other repairs. Thank you for your continued patience as we work to make the TTC safer, faster and more reliable!  Information about upcoming subway closures can be found here.

Accessibility on the TTC

The TTC is working hard to make the entire network accessible and as of January 2020, all TTC vehicles are accessible. To date, 49 of 75 subway stations are accessible and construction work continues across the network to make all subway stations accessible by 2025. Station accessibility construction is well underway at Bay, Sherbourne, Yorkdale, Wilson, Runnymede, Keele and Lansdowne stations. Work at College Station begins November 23, and at Donlands Station later this year. For more information, please visit ttc.ca.

New online Self-Serve Portal

Wheel-Trans has introduced a new online Self-Serve Portal. This gives applicants and customers who are required to re-register a convenient way to submit their application. The application can be filled out online and sent into Wheel-Trans staff through the online portal, eliminating the need to email, fax or mail any paper documents. High school students – Identification on the TTC

For the 2020-2021 school year, students aged 16 to 19 will need to carry one of the following forms of photo identification as proof of age on the TTC:

High school photo ID for 2020-2021 or 2019-2020 school year

Driver’s license or Ontario Photo card

This temporary change is being made as a result of COVID-19 and the fact that some schools may not be allowing photographers in the school to take high school ID photos. The TTC no longer provides photo ID for youth or seniors at the TTC Photo Identification Centre. Learn more on our website here

Automated shuttle trial

The City of Toronto has signed an agreement with Local Motors Industries to provide the City’s planned Automated Shuttle Trial service to begin operating Spring 2021. The six- to 12-month trial was scheduled to begin this month but was postponed due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Local Motors Industries, in partnership with Pacific Western Transportation, will be providing this service using an Olli shuttle, which is a state-of-the-art low-speed, electric vehicle with a seating capacity of up to eight passengers. An on-board human operator will oversee vehicle operations and can manually take control of the vehicle when required.

Additional details are available on the project site by visiting the Automated Shuttle Trial Page.

Wheel-Trans begins mobile app pilot

Wheel-Trans is excited to announce that they have launched a pilot for a new mobile app. The future mobile app will give customers another option to book and track their trips. One of the app features includes, “Where’s My Ride”.

This feature will allow customers to track their ride on a map ten minutes prior to their trip. The feature currently tracks only Wheel-Trans buses but will also include contracted vehicles later in 2021. The current phase of the mobile app pilot started October 1, 2020 and is open to a limited number of Wheel-Trans customers. Email [email protected] or call 416-393-4111 if you wish to be considered for the pilot.

Lost Articles Office – open to the public

The TTC Lost Articles Office is open to the public with modified hours of operation.

If you have lost something on the TTC, please call us between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m., Monday to Friday at 416-393-4100. If we have your item, please come and pick it up from our office at Bay Station between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. Monday to Friday. Please avoid visiting the Lost Articles Office at Bay Station unless you have called and confirmed that we have your item.

Thank you for doing your part

Mask audits have indicated that 97% of customers are wearing masks, however in the most recent audit, only 86% of riders are wearing them properly. Face masks need to cover your mouth and nose to be effective. Therefore, the TTC will continue with its communication and education campaign to increase compliance of proper mask use. Thank you for your support for a safe TTC.
