SAHRA Crime Update

Auto Theft

Let’s start with the encouraging news! Auto theft saw a very significant reduction in 2024. We ended the year with 15 auto thefts versus 26 in 2023, a 42% reduction.  Although we still have a way to go to reach more acceptable levels, there was great progress made.  I doubt this is comforting news for the 15 families who woke up to “no car in the driveway” but we are hopeful the downward trend will continue in 2025. The chart below illustrates our history from 2014 to 2024.

In the month of January 2025, we experienced no auto thefts versus three last year. As a general note, nationally the GTA is still considered the centre of auto theft for Canada.

One area of concern in the City is carjacking. Although carjacking incident data from Toronto Police is not available online, we know there was a local carjacking incident at the Starbucks at Avenue Road and Lawrence in January, around dinnertime. These incidents are continuing to be prevalent in York Region as well.  This link will take you to a leaflet prepared by Toronto Police specific to auto theft and carjacking prevention.

Break and Enter

Break and enter relating to houses increased in 2024. We had 14 incidents versus 11 in 2023.  In January 2025, there was no house B&E and one commercial incident (on Avenue Road) compared to 1 each in 2024.

House break and enters remain a concern and we will continue to track the data and bring our concerns to the 32 Division Community Police Liaison Committee.
